You may never heard of the phrase “position in space”, but everyone knows someone who has a weak position in space processing skill. In our educational therapy program, position in space refers to a person’s ability to determine relationships. This can range from a person’s physical position when talking with another person, to understanding where one fits into society, work or school. These relationships can be both physical and emotional. This learning process is not usually addressed with a traditional tutor.
Have you ever known someone who gets uncomfortably close during a conversation or maybe they stand way back? Either way, it can distract from the conversation making it difficult to focus on what is important. These are physical symptoms of someone with a low position in space. Other physical symptoms are not being able to find a car in a parking lot or you may easily lose your place on the page as you read.
Emotional symptoms can be even more damaging to ones life as they are not able to understand personal relationships with other people. Some people may act like they’re your best friend when in reality you aren’t that close. Or maybe someone doesn’t understand how important he or she is to you. Also, if you notice someone who switches from being very shy to obnoxious, that can be another emotional symptom.
What is truly amazing is most of the time people who demonstrate these behaviors are completely unaware they are doing something unnatural or different. It can be glaringly obvious to others, but nothing is different in their mind. Through our life management skills and exercises in our programs, we are able to increase ones position in space processing skill and it can be drastically life changing.
A low position in space is one of the more common weaknesses we see when doing our evaluations. Behind Size, Mental picture, and Figure Ground, it is the most common weakness we see with children and adults with learning disabilities. Once this processing skill is strengthened a whole new world emerges and great relationships are built. This can also dramatically help with school work.
One of the great side benefits we have noticed with our first students who have graduated, is the relationship that is built between the student and trainer (usually one of the parents). Our programs consists of the student and trainer meeting with us, the instructor, one day a week for an hour and completing the exercises at home five days a week. So, the student and trainer spend an hour together almost everyday for six-months. Then, you add in that we are teaching them about their position in space and how to understand relationships, the student realizes how much the trainer is trying to help them succeed in school and in life. This creates a great bond between the two. We’ve even heard a student say they don’t want to graduate from the program because they enjoy the time together so much. We’ve especially seen this in kids who are part of a big family with many siblings who may not feel as connected as they’d like to be with their parents. It is very exciting to see how many different ways this program helps kids and their parents.
There are 10 neurological processes, including position in space, that our program strengthens which has made the results of our program so overwhelmingly successful.
